Title: No One Is Self-Made: Build Your Village to Flourish in Business and Life
Author: Lakeysha Hallmon
Genre: non fiction business economics self help

March 2025, I attended a discussion on Dr. Lakeysha Hallmon's book Title: No One Is Self-Made: Build Your Village to Flourish in Business and Life at Black+Forth in Washington DC featuring the author herself Dr.Lakeysha Hallmon. I loved hearing her in person talk about so many ah ha moments I took away from her book.
What I enjoyed most about reading Dr. Lakeysha Hallmon’s No One Is Self-Made is how she reframes success—not as an individual journey but as a collective unfolding. “People just have a way of choosing you,” she says, a reminder that when we’re aligned with our purpose, the right people and resources, opportunities often flow in. However, it’s up to us to be intentional about what we welcome into our lives.
When building a “village”, key players that are suggested in the book are:
Futurists with vision
Builders who make it happen
Connectors who build bridges
Collaborators who do the work
Enthusiasts who uplift
Observers who bring clarity
Dr. Hallmon reminds us that support is active. That doing matters. Lock in. Show up. Teach. Govern your words. Listen. Invest. Vote. Pivot. Have fun!
Even though I really enjoyed this book I was left wishing she explored the discomfort of village-building more—the moments of mistrust, betrayal, and boundaries. The bumps in the road are real. But her reminder to get clear about what we want, and trust that alignment will attract the right people, is powerful.
